What are the different types of biodegradable plastics?

According to the source of raw materials, they can be categorized into two main types: bio-based biodegradable plastics and petrochemical-based biodegradable plastics. Bio-based biodegradable plastics primarily include four categories:

Category 1: Plastics derived directly from natural materials—currently including thermoplastic starch, bacterial cellulose, polysaccharides, and polyamino acids, as well as their blend-modified and chemically modified derivatives.

Category 2: Polymers produced through the combined processes of microbial fermentation and chemical synthesis, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and others.

Category 3: Polymers directly synthesized by microorganisms, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and others;

Category 4: Biodegradable plastics obtained by blending the above-mentioned materials, or by blending these materials with other chemically synthesized biodegradable plastics.
Petroleum-based biodegradable plastics are plastics produced by chemically synthesizing and polymerizing monomers derived from petrochemicals. Examples include polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), polybutylene succinate (PBS), polycarbonate of carbon dioxide (PPC), and polyglycolic acid (PGA), among others.
